Feb. 20: ‘Life in the Center: Archeology of the Mille Lacs Region’

MANKATO, Minn. – Archaeologist Jim Cummings (pictured) will discuss “Life in the Center: Archeology of the Mille Lacs Region” in a presentation that is free and open to the public Thursday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.in the Heritage Room at Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Centennial Student Union.

Cummings’ presentation is part of the Minnesota State Mankato Department of Anthropology’s celebration of World Anthropology Day. The department will have a raffle and free snacks in its department office (Trafton North, Room 359) Thursday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

His presentation will explore the archaeology and prehistory of the Mille Lacs Lake area, including its unique geographic setting, early archaeological investigations and continuing research. In addition, he will discuss the present-day interaction of archaeological inquiry and traditional Native American heritage preservation, research and practice.

Cummings received a bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State Mankato and a master’s degree in archaeology and cultural resource management from St. Cloud State University. Cummings is currently an archaeologist and principal investigator with McFarlane Consulting, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is also the consulting archaeologist for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Tribal Historic Preservation Office.
