What is Mavericks READ?

The Mavericks READ program is designed to engage college students, community partners, parents, and children in a literacy program dedicated to development of children pre-kindergarten through third grade in language, literacy, social and motivational skills.

Our goal is to engage college students, community partners, parents, and children in a literacy program dedicated to assisting in the success of children pre-kindergarten through third grade in language, literacy, social and motivational skills.

We will accomplish our goal by bringing children and college students together through one-on-one mentoring relationships to build the language, literacy, and social skills necessary to succeed not just in school, but also in life.

MSU has been active in community education and children's literacy in the Mankato/North Mankato community since 2000.  MSU provides a high-quality, comprehensive program that focuses on the development of the child, the family, and the college student.  MSU trains and supports college students willing to volunteer their time (including those awarded Federal Work-Study) to improve the early literacy, language, and social skills of children in and around our community.
