To prove English language proficiency, a student must provide documentation in one of the following ways:

  • TOEFL with a score of 500 or better on the paper and pencil exam or 173 or better on the computer based exam or 61 or better on the web-based exam; or completion of Level 109 at an English Language School (ELS). Minnesota State University, Mankato's TOEFL code is 6677; or
  • A minimum score of 80 on the Michigan Test of English Proficiency (MELAB); or
  • A score of 5.5 or better on the IELTS; or
  • Students transferring from a U.S. college or university may satisfy the English proficiency requirement by the completion of one semester of Freshman English Composition I with a C or better grade. If the student is transferring from a school that is on the quarter system they would have to complete Freshman Composition I & II with a C or better grade.
