Talent Grants

High School Seniors are eligible to apply for any of the talent grants listed below:

  • Communication Studies Talent Grants
  • Creative Writing Talent Grants
  • Music Talent Grants
  • Theatre Arts Talent Grants

Minnesota State University, Mankato awards talent grants to first year students on the basis of special talents, academic achievement and extracurricular successes in high school. The Talent Grant program provides recognition for students planning to continue their education at Minnesota State Mankato after high school. Talent Grants are non-renewable awards applied toward the first year's tuition at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Selection is based on various criteria, such as: involvement in school and community activities, leadership experiences and demonstrated talents.

Application Procedures

High school graduating seniors are eligible to apply for any of the talent grants described below. Selection criteria and application deadlines are outlined for each of the talent grant programs. Regardless of your intended major, you may apply for any available talent grant(s).

In order to be considered for Talent Grants or to apply for any of our other scholarships, please visit our online Scholarship Finder tool and complete the following steps:

 

1.    The Scholarship Finder tool will allow you to be matched up and search for scholarships at Minnesota State Mankato throughout your entire career on our campus. In order to use the tool you need to create an account.

2.    Click “sign in” at the upper right of the page.

3.    Enter your Minnesota State Mankato StarID and password.

4.    Click on the “General Application” hyperlink on the left side of the page.

5.    Fill out the personal information requested on the general application form. Any scholarships that you automatically qualify for already will be awarded to your account once you complete this form. Additionally, you can search and be considered for other scholarships across campus based on the information you provide.

Talent Grants

Creative Writing Talent Grants

Talent Grants are awarded to new students in the following areas of creative writing: Creative non-fiction, short fiction and poetry. You must submit a 5-20 page portfolio of one or more of your literary works. Your portfolio will be judged by a panel of English professors. Please do not send original manuscripts. Send copies only.

Creative Writing Portfolio Priority Deadline: March 1.

Music Talent Grants

Talent Grants are awarded by the Department of Music to first year students in the performance areas of voice, keyboard, strings, percussion and wind instruments. During an audition before the music faculty, your technical skill and musicianship will be assessed. Talent Grant recipients are required to participate in an ensemble in one of the following areas: band, choir, jazz, orchestra or piano accompanying. Private study in voice or on an instrument is encouraged.

Auditions must be completed by March 31. Students seeking Music Talent Grants are encouraged to apply for admission to the University as soon as possible. To schedule an individual appointment for an audition, please contact the Department of Music.

Communication Studies Talent Grants

Seniors will be considered based on participation in high school level speech activities and a letter of recommendation. As a recipient of a Communication Studies Talent Grants, you must participate on the MSU Forensics team during your full first year. Participation includes weekly meetings and travel to at least 3 tournaments a semester.

Theatre Arts Talent Grants

Talent Grants are awarded to high school seniors in the areas of Acting, Technical Theatre or Dance. Auditions and interviews will be conducted no later than April 15.
