Dr. James Lubker was raised in Estherville, Iowa. He completed his M.A. and PhD. degrees in Speech Science and Phonetics at the University of Iowa. He was, for several years, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery at University Hospitals in Iowa City before accepting a position as Associate Professor in the Dental Research Center at the University of North Carolina. In 1973 he joined a research team in the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Stockholm, where he eventually became Chair.
He and his Swedish wife, Karin, and their daughter, Disa, moved to Burlington, Vermont, to accept a position as Chair of the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Vermont. After several years he became Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Vermont. In 1995 he accepted the position as Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Northern Iowa. In July of 2005 he became Executive Vice President and Provost at UNI, retiring from that position in 2009.
Dr. Lubker and his wife continue to reside in Cedar Falls where they are very active with the local symphony and with the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
