The Influence of Religious Identity Salience
on the Perception of the Quality of Leader
Member-Exchange (LMX) Relationships
The aim of this study was to explore whether religious identity salience was differentially associated with the perception of the quality of the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) relationships, as reported by the subordinate, in same religion versus different religion dyads. Survey responses from 58 individuals indicated an interactive effect of same vs different religious dyad groupings and salience of religious identity on the perception of the quality of LMX relationships. In the case of same religion dyads, increasing religious identity salience was associated with increasing professional respect for the superior and loyalty towards him or her. On the contrary, in the case of different religion dyads, increasing religious identity salience was associated with decreasing professional respect for the superior and loyalty towards him or her. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of social identity theory and terror management theory by highlighting perceptions of in-group/out-group differences and existential anxiety.
