Studio Facilities

Ceramics
The ceramics studio is a large space with a central clay storage and preparation room. The adjacent kiln room has three gas-fired kilns and five electric kilns. An open courtyard can be used for raku, pit, and salt firing. New Salt and Raku kilns have been installed and we have recently rebuilt a 60 cubic foot downdraft car-kiln.

Drawing
The drawing studio is a large multi-purpose room on the lower level of the art complex that can be configured in a variety of ways to suit the formats of drawing workshop or life drawing.

Graphic Design
There are two design labs equipped with a total of 55 state-of-the-art Macintosh computers with current software for print and interactive work. Final print output is through a Xerox Phaser color printer in the critique and production space conveniently positioned between the two labs. A large format archival inkjet printer is also available for special applications. There is 24-hour access to the labs through a card swipe system and the labs are monitored for safety during evening hours by web cameras.

Painting
We have a large painting studio which serves all levels of painting students. The painting studio was recently remodeled with improved lighting, ventilation, and fire protection systems. The painting studio occupies the top floor of the Nelson Hall complex. An adjacent critique space provides a setting in which to evaluate work individually or in class reviews.

Photography
Our photography studio is equipped for both color and black-and-white print work. Digital photography, which is taught primarily in our new computer lab, exposes students to multiple techniques for still and video image production. Visit the Photography area on this web site.

Printmaking
The printmaking studio was recently remodeled with improved lighting, ventilation, and fire protection systems. New equipment includes a large format exposure unit for photomechanical printmaking. Our print studio houses two presses for lithography, and three presses for intaglio, and is equipped for silkscreen printmaking and various experimental printing processes.

Sculpture
Our sculpture studio is well-equipped for a variety of activities from wood cutting and shaping to welding. We have an outdoor courtyard for sculpture students and visiting artists working with large scale forms.
