From the Editors

11 April 2008

At the BER table in the CSU April 10, 2008:

9 April 2008

We are pleased to announce the release of Volume VI of the Blue Earth Review, the official literary magazine of Minnesota State University, Mankato. The issue features 119 pages of poetry, short fiction, nonfiction, and artwork from contributors across the country and students at MSUM. The magazine also features a new look including a new layout and a logo. The issue is available at the English department at MSUM, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and other select locations around Mankato.

This year the Blue Earth Review received a record number of submissions. We're pleased to feature new poems from poet Gary Soto as well as an interview with the poet. In addition to the nearly 250 regular poetry and prose submissions, we also received work from undergraduate and graduate students at MSUM and published several pieces in the issue. We also hosted our annual cover photo contest. Winners of these contests include:

·        Undergraduate Award Winners, Prose: Lindsay Schact

·        Undergraduate Award Winners, Poetry: Nataly Giammona

·        Flash Fiction Contest: Phebe Davidson

·        Cover Photo Contest: Britta Trygstad

The magazine will celebrate with a Volume VI Release Party from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the Hearth Lounge in the MSUM's Centennial Student Union. Contributors will read from their published work and copies will be available for those in attendance.

Blue Earth Review is the literary magazine of Minnesota State University, Mankato. Before being wholly revamped and renamed in 2003, BER was published under such titles as Medicine Jug, The Muse, and Minnesota River Review. It is currently in its sixth year of publication and is staffed by seven editors. The magazine seeks sparkling examples of contemporary poetry, prose, photography, and artwork from August through February.

For any questions or comments, please e-mail managing editor Bronson Lemer at bronson.lemer@mnsu.edu.

13 February 2008

Our fifth annual Flash Fiction Contest was a landmark of sorts. The quantity and quality of submission during our last couple contests raised the bar for this year's entries. Yet, we received several excellent submission. Our judge, Nicole Lea Helget, has chosen the following entries:

1st place:  Phebe Davidson, "Till She Drops"
2nd place:  Peter Joseph Gloviczki, "Dating Caroline"
3rd place:  Cherri Randall, "Paper Dolls, 1974"

Congratulations to this year's winners!  To those writers who did not place in our contest, please consider submitting to next year's contest or for general submission in our future publications.  Also, please note that some submissions are still being considered for general publication in this year's magazine.  If you do not hear anything from us by March 1, you may assume that we were unable to find a place for your work.  If there are any questions, please email blueearthreview@gmail.com.

Thanks for your support of Blue Earth Review.  Keep writing!
