Minimum RAM suggestion (256MB for MacOS 9)
Some of these Control Panel, Extension settings, Finder / System Preference settings and web browser changes help keep your Mac running fast and stable.
General Controls turn off the "warn me if computer..."; Menu blinking set to off.
Control Strip-- hold down Option key and click on the tab (left sid of screen), drag tab to right side of screen about third of the way up.
turn off menu blinking, AutoMenus, and remember listing
turn off Smooth all Fonts from the Fonts tab within the Appearance Control Panel
turn on Double-click title bars to collapse windows from the Options tabe within the Appearance Control Panel.
QuickTime Settings; Control Panels. Intall Quicktime 6 (do this after install the web browsers)
set setting to don't Enable CD-ROM AutoPlay, and connection speed to T1 (if on Ethernet; if using dial-in connection set to 56K)
go To Memory Control Panel turn on Virtual memory to 40 to 50MB above real memory.

Set Date/Time to show seconds
Options:
turn on Energy Saver to automatically turn on machine at desired time.
turn off the following Extensions - Web Sharing, FileSharing, ATI Graphics Accelarator, Apple Menu Options, ColorSync (unless using PhotoShop or other graphical use programs)
DialAssist, Launcher, Location Manager; ((Modem; remote access (unless using dial up )), Users and Groups, Printer Share,
delete extra PPD from Printer Descriptions Extension Folder (if you don't have those printers delete them)
all printer driver extensions (StyleWriter, etc) except LaserWriter 8 (throw them away) unless you have one of those printers.
Install all the following apps in the Applications (MacOS 9) folder (set to view by list)
Delete old Internet Explorer or Netscape if installed.
Install Internet Explorer 5.1.7 and Netscape 7.0.2
make aliases of each and place them in the Apple Menu folder which is in the System folder
(put an extra space before name to list at the top of menu)
From Edit Menu; Preferences: Browser Display tab (set address to what you want)
Advanced Tab: Remember 1 places visited; Cache to 0 MB
Download Options tab: select Immediately remove items after they have been downloaded
Install, if not already preinstalled, Adobe Reader 4.0 (do this after the web browsers install - that installs the plugin for viewing PDFs in your web browser) into Applications folder (Reader 4.0 is faster than 5.0 and 6.0). This places the PDF Viewer plug-in into the appropriate web browser, otherwise just drag the plug-in into the browser's plug-in folder.

(custom install; there's not many custom install settings), don't select Word Find, and Web Authoring (unless you want to make web pages from Word, Excel docs). Once installed run updates if needed.

Restart if needed. Open Word, turn off recently used file option from the Preferences (general tab) listed under File Menu ( and turn off the bulleted and number option from the AutoCorrect submenu. Open Excel, turn off the recently used file option from the Preferences (general tab) listed under File Menu. same with PowerPoint...adjust memory allocation for Excel to 3800 or 4500k and Word to 6800k.make aliases of all of these; put in Apple Menu (put an extra space before name to list at the top of menu)
Optional: turn off project gallery at startup
Locate StuffIt Expander place in Utilities folder within the Apps folder. Open StuffIt Expander; File Menu; Preferences; check both of the delete after expanding options.
List System folder, Extensions Folder, Prefs Folder, Applications Folder by list.
set Spring Loaded folders to short setting. (within Finder. Edit Menu; Preferences)
Other good things to do:
Rebuild Desktop every month or so
on startup press down the Apple Key + Option (when the computer asks do you want to rebuild select OK)
