Setup Tips - Windows

Gary's Suggested Setup Instructions for:

Windows XP

FireFox

mozilla.com

FireFox (1.5.0.x) Menu Preferences;

  • General tab -
    • Location (type in where you want your default web page)
  • Privacy tab (in addition to what is checked or unchecked by default) -
    • History (0 days),
    • Saved Form Information (uncheck),
    • Saved Passwords (uncheck remember..),
    • Download Manager History (Upon successful download),
    • Cache (0kb)

FireFox (2.0.x and 3.0.x) Menu Preferences;

  • Main tab -
    • Location (type in where you want your default web page)
  • Privacy tab (in addition to what is checked or unchecked by default) -
    • uncheck; Remember visited pages... (0 days),
    • uncheck remember what I enter in forms...
    • uncheck remember what I've downloaded
    • Accecpt cookies from sites; keep until I close Firefox
  • Security tab (in addition to what is checked or unchecked by default) -
    • uncheck remember passwords for sites
  • Advanced tab (in addition to what is checked or unchecked by default) -
    • Network tab
      • cache; use up to 0MB of space...

Internet Explorer 7

  • From Tools Menu; Internet Options: General tab (set address to what you want)
  • Settings button: Amount of disk space to use; 8MB
  • History Area: Days to keep pages in history; 0 (select clear history if you haven't done so already)

Office 2003

  • Open Word, turn off recently used file option from the Tools Menu; Options
  • Open Excel, turn off the recently used file option from the Tools Menu; Options
  • Open PowerPoint, turn off the recently used file option from the Tools Menu; Options

QuickTime

Real Player

Windows Media Player

Flash Player

Adobe Reader

Other Stuff

  • Run CCleaner every so often (after all these installation and whenever you do a lot of installs or after a month or so of use of your computer)
  • GRISOFT Antivirus
  • Norton Antivirus

Use MavDisk for backup and/or CDs or DVDs
