The Special Circumstance process reviews financial aid eligibility based on changes to certain aspects of personal data originally reported on the FAFSA which has subsequently changed. All Special Circumstance requests are subject to review and may not be considered suitable for this process.
Situations that may be considered include the following. Please see Special Circumstance form below for additional information.
- Changes in employment
- Reduction of untaxable sources of income such as child support or social security benefits
- Medical expenses paid out of pocket
- Private elementary or high school tuition paid out of pocket
- Separation/divorce or death of a parent or spouse since FAFSA was originally filed
- Distribution of 401K or similar, based on financial hardship, that is included in adjusted gross income. Documentation required:
- Personal statement detailing situation and how funds were utilized in 2008. Indicate if any funds are remaining.
- Copy of mortgage or rent documents showing amount of monthly payment if funds used to assist in payments.
- Copy of amount of utility bills, medical costs, or other expenses that were paid with these funds.
- Copy of the last two years’ (2007 and 2008) federal income tax return (pages 1&2).
Additional situations that may be considered include:
- Nursing home expenses not covered by insurance
- Documentation: Paid receipts of nursing home care expenses and
- statement showing amount covered by insurance.
- Property damage due to natural disaster or fire not covered by insurance
- Documentation: Document showing amount of property damage, and statement showing amount covered by insurance
- Parent enrolled at least half-time in degree seeking program
- Documentation: Copy of acceptance letter and most recent enrollment statement showing at least half-time status.
- Proceeds from sale of farm or business due to a foreclosure or bankruptcy counted in adjusted gross income
- Documentation: Federal income tax return and document showing proceeds of sale.
Students submitting this form prior to being awarded financial aid will have any adjustments made reflected in their award package.
Students submitting this form after having been awarded will receive a letter informing them what, if any, changes will be made to their eligibility. These students are still encouraged to accept the original aid awarded to them as there is no guarantee that this process will result in additional financial aid eligibility.
Please note: All follow-up information requested for your financial aid application must have completed processing before the Special Circumstance request can be reviewed.
