Todd Pfingsten, Director of Campus Recreation

This is Todd's ninteenth year at MSU as the Director of Campus Recreation, overseeing staff, facilities, programs and services in intramural sports, open recreation, fitness activities, sport clubs, and adventure education. Prior to his current position he spent six years as the Assistant Director for Intramural Sports at the University of Nebraska and 3 1/2 years as the acting Director of Intramural-Recreational Sports (now Campus Recreation) at Minnesota State University Mankato. He received bachelor's degrees in Accounting and Business Finance in 1989 and a master's degree in Physical Education/Sport Administration in 1993, all from MSU. In his spare time, Todd enjoys spending time with his wife and three children along with playing golf, officiating basketball, and coaching his kids.


Ryan Stevens, Program Coordinator

This is Ryan's eighteenth year at MSU as a Program Coordinator for the Office of Campus Recreation. Ryan coordinates the Intramural Sports and Sport Club programs as well as the administration of Student Personnel and Open Recreation. He received his bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998 and his master's degree in Health Promotion from Virginia Tech in 1999. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys raising his twin sons, playing golf, cooking/grilling, and spending time with family & friends.




Carly Hopper, Program Coordinator

Carly Hopper is going into her fifth year as the Program Coordinator of Fitness, Wellness, and Special Programs and has been involved in the fitness and wellness industry for over 22 years. She has a MS degree in Community Health, is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and maintains certifications as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor. She also holds a Fitness Nutrition Specialty Certification through ACE and is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 200) through the Yoga Alliance. Carly is a yoga instructor and teacher training faculty at Sun Moon Yoga licensed school and teacher training. Carly enjoys being active with her family and friends and has a passion for teaching yoga and leading yoga retreats around the globe.



Sam Steiger, Program Coordinator

This is Sam's seventh year at MSU, and his third year as a Program Coordinator for the Office of Campus Recreation.  Sam coordinates the Adventure Education Program (AEP), which provides teambuilding and leadership development for the university and surrounding community.  The AEP operates the High Ropes and Challenge Course located on the south side of campus as well as the outdoor climbing wall and the indoor climbing wall in Myers Field House.  Sam received his bachelor's degree from the University Wisconsin- Stevens Point in 2001 and his master's degree in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2006.  In his spare time he enjoys photography, travel, the outdoors, time with his dog 'Ryno' and is an avid Chicago Cubs fan.



Ben Nelson, Program Coordinator

This is Ben's third year as a Program Coordinator for the Office of Campus Recreation, overseeing marketing and facility scheduling for the office. Prior to his current position Ben spent five years as an Athletic Equipment Manager and Adjunct Faculty for the Department of Human Performance at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Ben received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Sport Management from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2008 and 2012. In his free time Ben enjoys attending Maverick sporting events, Mankato MoonDogs baseball games, and spending time outdoors.



Shawn Achenbach, Intramural Sports GA


Shawn is in his fourth year at Minnesota State University, Mankato He graduate in spring 2017 with a bachelor's degree in Sport Managment and a minor in Marketing. He is currently pursuing his master of arts in Sport Management.  This is Shawn's first year as the graduate assistant for Intramural Sports in the Office of Campus Recreation. Shawn will hire and train intramural officials and supervisors while also working with various other areas within intramural sports.  Shawn graduated from Viroqua High School in Viroqua, WI in 2013 where he played a variety of sports.  In his free time Shawn enjoys following his favorite sports teams and spending time with friends.


Spencer Klevan, Fitness & Wellness Graduate Assistant


Spencer is the Fitness and Wellness Programs Graduate Assistant.  He recieved his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science here at MNSU, Mankato and is now a second year graduate student in the Exercise Physiology program. Spencer performs Fitness Assessments, creates exercise programs, teaches group exercies classes, and does Personal Training for Campus Recreation. On top of classes and his work in Campus Recreation, Spencer is also a wellness coach at the Mankato Family YMCA.  He is also very involved in the Livestrong Program for cancer patients and survivors.  Spencer loves to work out and participate in a variety of outdoor activities.

 Bill Landis, Adventure Education Program Graduate Assistant

Bill is a second-year graduate student at MNSU studying Experiential Education.  Bill began working with the AEP as a challenge course facilitator in August 2016 and became a Graduate Assistant for the program in January 2017.  Bill and his GA partner, Val, are responsible for hiring, training, and scheduling Rock Wall and Ropes Course staff, as well as leading programs on the MNSU challenge course, and various administrative tasks to keep the program running.  Bill earned his B.S. in Management concentrating in Consulting and Leadership and a Minor in Environmental Studies from Binghamton University, in his home state of New York, in May 2013.  Bill enjoys long backpacking trips in the wilderness and has trekked in Chilean Patagonia, the Adirondacks in upstate New York, and along the Appalachian Trail.


 Valerie Stocking, Adventure Education Program Graduate Assistant

Valerie is in her first year in the Experiential Education Master's program. As a Graduate Assistant for the Adventure Education Program, she will have a hand in the operations of both the indoor climbing facility in Myers Field House and the Outdoor Pinnacle, as well as the Challenge Course at MSU. She is a proud graduate of James Madison University’s class of 2017 with her Bachelor’s in Religious Studies. In her spare time, Valerie enjoys playing outside, sitting in coffee shops, sending people mail, and attempting to read without falling asleep. 



Joe Wolf, Maverick Adventures Graduate Assistant

Joe is in his first year as a master's student in the geography department.  He recieved his bachelor's degree in Geography from Minnesota State, Mankato in May 2016.  Throughout the next year, Joe will be working towards developing Maverick Adventures, a trip & travel, outdoor rental center, skills clinics, and certification opportuninities, for students at MNSU. As the Maverick Adventures Graduate Adventures, he is very excited to provide pilot programs and outreach to the student body to implement Maverick Adventures across campus in the years to come.  Joe has previously served as Vice President of the student body at MNSU (2014-2015) and the State Chair of Students United (2016-2017). Joe enjoys photographpy, travel, skiiing, and mountaineering in his free time.
