Stephen Stoynoff Biography
College of Arts and Humanities, Minnesota State University, Mankato
Stephen Stoynoff, Ph.D., is internationally and nationally recognized as a leading scholar in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). In 2012, Minnesota State University awarded him the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award. Each year, three Awards are given at the University, and nominees must be tenured faculty with national or international reputations in their fields.
Stephen holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Willamette University, an MA in English Education and Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from Portland State University, and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Oregon.
He has been widely published and cited by other scholars in Applied Linguistics, and is considered an authority on TESOL. Stephen has co-edited two major books and written numerous book chapters and articles that address the complexities and challenges of assessing language ability. His scholarship has contributed to practicing teachers as well as academics. Stephen recently wrote a book chapter that explores the issue of fairness as it relates to the design and use of second language assessments.
Given the significant consequences of tests for test developers, test takers, and test score users, Stephen believes it is important to consider and respond to fairness concerns when developing or using tests of second language ability.
