How do I make an appointment?

To schedule an appointment with a CDC staff member, please call the CDC reception desk at 507-389-6061. The CDC is open Monday-Friday, year round.

How do I find out about career events (Education Fair, Job Fair, Career Days, & Practice Interviews?) How do I register for them?

For information on all fairs and events, go to the “Fairs & Events” section of our website for all events and dates, as well as links to event information.

What do I need to send when I apply for a teaching job? What are credential files?

Credentials or credential files are the materials sent to school districts by teacher candidates to apply for teaching positions. Although you should always follow the instructions provided by the districts in job listings, our Guidelines for Self-managed Credential Files will help you to prepare your materials and to know what to include.

How do I write a resume?

The MSU CDC Job Search Handbook is our #1 requested resource and the one we recommend you start with. You can find the handbook online. The handbook has step-by-step instructions on how to put together your resumes as well as some samples to help you get started. You may also view our Online Job Search Strategies workshop for more resume tips.

How do I write a cover letter?

Our CDC Job Search Handbook available online will help you to get started on your cover letter. There is also a cover letter section in our Online Job Search Strategies Workshop.

How do I sign up for mavjobs.com? What do I need to do to look for jobs and post my resume on the system?

Full access to mavjobs.com is now free for alumni. To register: go to www.mavjobs.com. Click on students and alumni. Complete your profile information. Fields in red are required. Click submit. The CDC staff will send you a user id and password within 2 business days. YOU ONLY NEED TO REGISTER ONCE! If you have forgotten your username and or password email mavjobs@mnsu.edu or call 507-389-6061 and your username and password can be emailed to you. As an alumni, you will receive an email once a year to confirm that you want to continue your access to mavjobs.com. Please respond to this notification to ensure uninterrupted access.

To upload a resume: log into your mavjobs.com account. Click on the Resumes & Documents tab on the navigation. Click Upload Resume. Name the resume. Click Browseto select your document from your local machine. Choose the correct document, and click Open. Click Continue, and the resume will upload in a matter of minutes. Click Create New Cover Letters. Type a cover letter title. Click Continue. It is not necessary to add credentials, references, and portfolio unless specifically requested by an employer.

To search for jobs: log into your mavjobs.com account. Click on one of the Job Search options on the left-hand side of the screen. Search all will show all jobs in that category. Narrow the search by clicking on the job search category name such as Degree Required/Entry Level. Select the desired search options. (If the search does not return good results, do not choose as many search options; or just try entering a keyword search.) Click Search Jobs. Click on the Job Title to view the details of the job.

How do I find job openings and employers in my field?

There are many options for finding job openings and employers in your field. If you are just beginning your job search, we suggest using the CDC Job Search Handbook for guidelines on how to conduct your search. The Job Search Handbook is available online. If you would like personal assistance with your job search, please schedule an appointment with a CDC staff member by calling the CDC reception desk at 507-389-6061.

Is there anyone recruiting on campus for my major? How can I sign up to interview on campus?

Many employers recruit on campus for a variety of majors. To find the most current information about who will be recruiting on campus, visit our website and click on the “Who's Recruiting on Campus” link on the right side of the page. Alumni who want to interview on campus should sign up for mavjobs.com, our online job posting system.

How can I prepare for my next big interview?

Interviewing is a skill you can improve with preparation and practice. To begin your preparation, you can work through our online Strategies for Successful Interviews workshop. The job search handbook includes a section on interviewing. View it online at http://www.mnsu.edu/cdc/alumni/jobsearch/.

What resources do you have for students with disabilities who are looking for jobs?

Job seekers with disabilities can find CDC resources on our “Resources for Diverse Populations” webpage.

Minnesota WorkForce Centers has a website that is designed to help individuals who have a disability and are looking for help. This site is located at http://www.deed.state.mn.us/rehab/index_js.htm

All Employers and job seekers should be familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and other relevant laws. Current information is available at www.ada.gov

Check your local library, bookstore, or the CDC's Career Resource Library for books and other resources that are available to borrow or purchase. These include:
