What does the CDC do to assist students with resumes?

There are a number of ways that the CDC works with students on the topic of resumes. One resource we suggest is the Job Search Handbook, which is available in the CDC or on the CDC website. This resource offers a step-by-step guide to developing a resume, as well as multiple examples.

Other ways for students to get resume guidelines and samples include:

  • The Career Resource Library – a variety of books and magazines with resume tips and examples including Complete Resume & Job Search Book for College Students-1 and 2, Vault Guide to Resume, Cover Letters, & Interviewing, 101 More Best Resumes
  • CDC Quick Stop – a “first-come, first-served” walk-in service for students to have their resumes critiqued
  • Individual appointments – students can schedule an individual appointment with a CDC staff member for a resume critique

How does the CDC help undeclared students?

The Career Development Center offers a wealth of assistance and information to help students to choose or change their major. Students in the process of deciding their major can meet with a career counselor by making an appointment. The Undeclared Major Handbook and the CDC’s comprehensive Career Resource Library are two resources students find helpful when exploring their career options. Students are also encouraged to get involved in the development of their career by trying classes in areas they are interested in, finding related part-time jobs or internships, and attending events such as the Majors Fair.

A student has asked me to write a letter of recommendation. How do I start?

Students in many fields are encouraged to gather letters of recommendation from faculty members and on-campus supervisors. You may find it helpful to meet with the student prior to writing a letter, and it is also useful to request a copy of the student’s resume. Be specific with the student about the timeline you need to write a letter. Additional information letters of recommendations can be found in the faculy/staff section of our website.

Are there any ethics and guidelines faculty members and staff should be aware of when working with students who are looking for employment?

The MSU Career Development Center holds membership in the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and follows the Principles for Professional Conduct for Career Services and Employment Professionals. To ensure that all parties at MSU treat students in a fair and lawful manner, we also recommend that faculty members are aware of the NACE Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring.

How can I find information on salaries?

When students are seeking salary information, we offer them a number of options. If a student comes to the CDC, we have printed resources including:

  • The Occupational Outlook Handbook
  • National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Salary Survey
  • Specific resources by major

In addition, there are a number of online resources. A few that we suggest include:

Does the CDC track alumni in regard to related employment or types of jobs?

Each year the Career Development Center conducts a survey of all Minnesota State University, Mankato graduates using the guidelines set by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). The surveys for graduates are collected in print format, online, or by telephone. The summary reports provide consumer information to current and prospective students for use in selecting fields of study. Data is based on the total number of graduate majors rather than the number of graduate awards or the number of individuals.

Please see the Graduate Statistics section of our website for several summary reports on the status of MSU's graduates within one year of graduation.
