Greetings from CETL! Things have been getting busy for the CETL at MSU. We are in the midst of planning an all day conference titled "Talking About Teaching and Technology," co-sponsored by MSU's Office of Information and Technology. Mark October 29th on your calendar if you are interested in hearing from faculty who have found ways to use technology to their advantage in the classroom. We will have much more on this conference on the website in the next week.
We continue to offer new faculty workshops every other week. This Thursday and Friday new faculty will hear from Tim Kochery concerning the use of technology in the classroom. Should be interesting and helpful at the same time.
The most important happening last week was the first peer faculty consultation through the CETL. This is an exciting new program offered to all MSU faculty interested in talking about teaching with a peer faculty member trained to observe classes and getting valuable feedback from students at the same time. We have 13 faculty who have requested this service and will be working closely with them for the next few weeks. These is still time to contact our office if you think this would be something you would be interested in but time is running out fast. These consultations are most valuable during the mid-term of each semester.
Finally, we are planning two different book groups in the spring semester. Take a look at the website concerning the books we will be using the the day and times these offerings.
We are glad to welcome two new faculty into the teaching academy at MSU!

Welcome, Mary Hadley. Mary teaches Chemistry 100, 105 and 111. She holds a Ph.D. from Guelp in Ontario Canada. She has a dog and asked to have him featured in the photo but we think it better that we get to know Mary first! Mary's favorite movie she saw last year was "Out of Africa" even though it has been out for many years. Her favorite book she has read in the past year is "Seat of the Soul." The most confusing thing for Mary (and many other faculty) is where to go to pick up the key to a campus vehicle (Wiecking Center across from Carkoski Commons if you are not sure)!

The new faculty member pictured above is Susan Freeman. Susan is a professor in the women studies program where she teaches global perspectives on women and change, feminist thought and a graduate course in feminist research. Susan's partner is Lori Andrew and they have four cats. Susan received her BA from Furman University, MA from the University of Cincinnati and Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Her favorite movie the past year was "Bend It Like Beckham" and favorite book was "Caramelo" by Sandra Cisneros. Her most confusing moments so far at MSU would be trying to figure out why the times on clocks around campus are all different--something many of us have noticed over the years. The most unique thing about Susan is she was born with a tooth and has a tattoo of Rosie the Riveter--she does not indicate where that tattoo is!

This final picture shows some of our new faculty at a new faculty workshop in the Global Learning Lab working to improve their understanding of outlook and other MSU software.
