Hello from CETL,
What a wonderful day we had on February 19th as CETL sponsored and hosted an all-day conference titled, "Talking About Teaching and Active Learning." Dr. Z. did a terrific job taking our faculty through a combination of reasons we should attempt to use some active learning in the classroom and why we should consider these activities. In his typically humorous approach, Todd explained the power of active learning and the pedagogical basis for this power.
There were also wonderful presentations during the day by our own faculty who effectively use active learning in the classroom at MSU. Although lecture has its place, these faculty explained some of the rich and stimulating ways they are helping our students take responsibility for their own learning by being active rather than passive in their approach to learning.
Next week we have a number of faculty who will be presenters at the MnSCU CTL Conference in the Twin Cities. I have been told that MSU has more faculty presenters that any other campus in the system! This is exciting but not surprising. We are fast becoming leaders in the state when it comes to teaching and learning issues. We currently have over 50 faculty in four different learning communities discussing the incorporation of classroom assessment techniques into their classes or redesigning their classes to emphasize significant learning experiences for our students.
This is an exciting time for me as Director of CETL. We have a number of initiatives planned for next year which are currently being worked on. Read in the website about the faculty learning certificate planned for next year. Soon we will have information on peer mentoring for our new faculty.
Below are some photos taking at the Feb. 19th conference. If you attending, we hope you found it beneficial. If you were unable to attend stay tuned for the date of another conference on active learning for next year.
