Hello from CETL,
Welcome back to spring semester 2006! We are looking forward to another exciting semester of work with our terrific faculty. Many programs are in place from last semester and we have some new opportunities.
The Certificate I Program continues with sessions on Classroom Assessment Techniques, Course Redesign, Diversity in the Classroom and Portfolios for faculty and students. We will end the year with presentations of capstone projects and a final lunch with President Davenport where nearly 70 faculty will receive their certificates.
The Certificate II groups continue to meet to discuss topics they generated concerning teaching and learning. Last semester these faculty learned how to be peer faculty consultants and are now assigned to one faculty member in the Certificate I Program.
New this semester is an online group of 17 faculty working to better understand and use Classroom Assessment Techniques. This is our first attempt to develop a faculty learning community online. Nan Johnson-Curiskis, one of our faculty fellows is the facilitator for this group.
Besides that learning community we have the Feminist Issues group continuing their work which spans a two year period. They will end this semester. A grant from IFO made this group possible.
We are also excited about our peer faculty consultation program. There will be well over 40 of these taking place during the 5th-10th week of classes. Trained faculty will visit another faculty member's classroom for observation and will share any ideas. This is a valuable program. Any faculty reading this who would like a peer faculty consultation should contact CETL. We have over 30 faculty trained to be observers.
Mentoring continues this semester with a number of new faculty paired with tenured faculty. These pairs meet regularly to discuss teaching and learning issues and other problems related to being a faculty member in a new situation. This group will have a final lunch the first week of May to share their experiences and celebrate the end of their first year at MSU.
Please spend some time looking around this website at the many and varied programs occurring at MSU this semester. We hope you can join us.
Sincerely,
Stewart Ross
