Since 2007, Minnesota State University, Mankato has participated with five other colleges in a Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching project known as The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Along with findings from research such as the National Study of Student Engagement, reflections from a diverse group of faculty and students have helped institutions create environments that engender passion and commitment for learning in all members of the academic community.
The CASTL Program seeks to support the development of a scholarship of teaching and learning that fosters significant, long-lasting learning for all students, enhances the practice and profession of teaching, and brings to faculty members' work as teachers the recognition and reward afforded to other forms of scholarly work. Achieving these goals has involved significant shifts in thought and practice. For faculty in most settings, teaching is a private act, limited to the teacher and students; it is rarely evaluated by professional peers.
Institutions were selected for the CASTL Leadership Program in 2006 based on their “demonstrated commitment to and capacity for action, inquiry and leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning.” Members in our project group have included Glendale Community College, Minnesota State University Mankato, Northern Essex Community College, Pine Manor College, and Salem State College. We call ourselves the Communities of Practice Pooling Educational Resources (COPPER) and together, we have been involved in a range of collaborative projects since 2006.
