Department of Speech Communication

 

Minutes – January 24, 2007

 

 

Present:  Christa Brown, Kathleen Crawford, Dan Cronn-Mills, Kristen Cvancara, Dave Engen, Jill Hildebrandt, Jessica Samens, Warren Sandmann, Kristen Treinen, Leah White

GAC Rep:  Michelle Dodge

Absent:  Lou Eckert, Nan Johnson-Curiskis (On sabbatical leave)

 

The faculty of the Department of Speech Communication met on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at 12 Noon in MH 215.

 

Lou Eckert will not be attending faculty meetings in Spring 2007.   Lou Eckert chose  to teach SPEE 100, section 12, which overlaps with department meetings 

 

Fun/Social Committee:  Lou Eckert has stepped down from chairing this committee.

Kathleen Crawford will be the new chair for the remainder of the 2006-2007 academic year.

 

GE 1B Assessment and Public Speaking Classes:  Warren updated the faculty on the GE 1B Assessment Review.  The document can be viewed at the following website:

Leah White will have the MSU Forensics students develop a video resource tool consisting of three types of speeches:  Good Speeches, So-So Speeches and Poor Speeches.

 

The assessment indicated students are having difficulty citing sources properly.  Dan will visit with Randall McClure regarding this.  The Curriculum Subcommittee may want to discuss this item further.

 

Applied Organizational Position:  Kristen Cvancara, chair, updated the faculty on this search.

 

Communication and Culture Position:  David Engen, chair, updated the faculty on this search.

 

Fixed-Term Search for 2007-2008:  Jim Dimock will be the search chair.  The department will hold a regional search. 

 

Department Research Expectations:  The faculty felt there needs to be a more unified understanding of research.  The issue was referred to the Personnel Committee for further discussion.

 

Equipment:  All of the equipment items have been ordered and received.

 

Kristen Treinen/Release Time:  Dr. Treinen is the Basic Course Director and Director of the TAs.  The faculty discussed increasing the release time for Dr. Treinen.  After discussion, David Engen moved  Kristen Treinen be given a three course release as the Basic Course Director and Director of the TAs contingent  the TA numbers remain the same.  Jim Dimock seconded.  Passed.

 

Program Review Self-Study:  The handout was distributed to faculty.  Please send to Dan via e-mail what sections you would like to work on.

 

Communication Day:  February 7, 2007.

 

Good News:  Please continue to send Good News items to Dan.
