Learning Goals

Communication Studies is a field of study inviting students to engage in the theoretically-informed practice of communication in their personal, professional, and public lives. Undergraduate students in Communication Studies are expected to meet the following goals.

Category 1 – Presentations: Give an effective presentation
Students are required in CMST 485 Senior Seminar to submit evidence of their ability to research, prepare, and give an effective public presentation. The evidence may include video recordings of speeches or other presentations, or feedback from instructors. Students must also submit a self-reflection on their public speaking skills.

Category 2 – Relationships: Explain the role communication plays in relationships
Students are required in CMST 485 Senior Seminar to to submit evidence of their understanding of the role communication plays in forming, maintaining, transforming, and dissolving relationships. The evidence may include papers, journals, exams, or other appropriate assignments. Students must submit a self-reflection on their understanding of communication and relationships.

Category 3 – Contexts: Explain how context impacts communication
Students are required in CMST 485 Senior Seminar to submit evidence of their understanding of the importance of context in communication. The evidence may include papers, journals, exams, or other appropriate assignments. Students must submit a self-reflection on their understanding of communication and context.

Category 4 – Symbols: Analyze how humans use symbols to communicate
Students are required in CMST 485 Senior Seminar to submit evidence of their understanding of how humans use symbols to communicate. The evidence may include papers, journals, exams, or other appropriate assignments. Student must submit a self-reflection on their understanding of symbolic communication.

Category 5 – Research: Engage in meaningful communication research utilizing appropriate research methods (qualitative, quantitative, rhetorical criticism, performance).
Students are required in CMST 485 Senior Seminar to submit a research paper or performance.
