‘Moving Towards Success’

Dr. Suzanne Bunkers (Professor of English) and Dr. Sheryl Dowlin (Professor of Speech Communication) have completed the 2003-2004 "Moving Towards Respect" ("MTR") project and its follow-up assessment component. On 30 June 2004, the final "MTR" report and its appendices were submitted to Lynda Milne, Director of the MnSCU Center for Teaching and Learning.

The "MTR" project was funded by a $15,000 "Learning that Lasts" Grant from MnSCU as well as by generous funding from the MSU Office of Cultural Diversity, the MSU Colleges of Education and Social and Behavioral Sciences, the University of Minnesota's Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, the Faribault School District, and several other educational organizations.

Recently, "Moving Towards Respect" was one of two projects highlighted in MnSCU's Office of the Chancellor’s Academic and Student Affairs Report (broken link) for April through July 2004. [See page 4, "Preparing teachers to meet the needs of the changing faces in Minnesota classrooms"].

Dr. Bunkers' and Dr. Dowlin's scholarly paper, based on their collaborative work directing the "Moving Towards Respect" project, has been accepted for presentation at the Conference of the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE). Since 1984, the IAIE has brought together professional educators interested in diversity and equity issues related to intercultural education, multicultural education, anti-racist education, human rights education, conflict-resolution, multi-lingualism issues, etc.

One of the main objectives of the upcoming IAIE conference is to familiarize U.S. and European educators with each other's work and to promote cross-Atlantic collaboration on the many pressing issues that confront educators in multi-cultural societies. The theme of the IAIE conference, to be held in Verona, Italy, in April 2005, is "Diversity in Education in an International Context--Educazione Interculturale nel contesto internazionale."
