1) Admission Standards
What are the basic requirements to apply?
An applicant must have a GPA of 2.75 or better in overall undergraduate
studies and a 3.0 for the last two years of undergraduate work. (No GRE
scores are required.)
Provisional Admission
Probationary Status will be provided for applicants with an
undergraduate degree whose GPA is below regular admission standards
under the following conditions:
- An applicant may be admitted on the basis of their
performance on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Acceptable performance
is a composite score of 1380 and at least one subtest of 500.
OR - An
applicant may petition the graduate faculty for provisional admission.
In such cases, admission will be contingent upon the student's
adherence to contract terms formulated by graduate faculty stipulating
specific performance requirements.
- Completion of the contract requirements will result in a change to a regular admission status.

2) Information for the Graduate College
We welcome your application for admission. International applicants should read the information posted on this page
and read the information posted for international applicants. Please submit the following materials to the College of Graduate Studies:
- An online application.
The online application can be used to apply for and
non–degree study.
- You must arrange for an official transcript from institution(s)
you have previously attended. Students who attended Minnesota State
University, Mankato or any other MnSCU institution do not have to
arrange for receipt of transcripts from these institutions. All other
transcripts are required, including those from the University of
Minnesota. Applicants who were educated at overseas institutions must
arrange for a credential evaluation to be submitted as part of their
application. The evaluation must be written by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
- $40.00 non–refundable application fee (not required for non–degree applicants).

3) Information for the Department of Communication Studies
What must be sent to the department if applying to the MA, MS or MFA program?
- An essay stating your personal, educational and professional goals.
- Three
(3) letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to judge your
academic potential. Share the dropbox link and password (see below)
with your letter writers. The writers may submit the letter of
recommendation directly to the dropbox.
- A writing
sample demonstrating your ability to organize and compose a sound
analysis using evidence and external sources (preferrably a research or
term paper).
What must be sent to the department if applying to a certificate program?
- an essay stating your personal, educational and professional goals
