Hey Rick. I appreciate your perspective--as it comes from one that values evidence based practice. *** *** ***The trouble is that finding valid measures of real world applicability is really, really tough. (It's easy to show that something doesn't work; but tough to show if something works--and if so, by how much.) Especially when stuttering's variability is mixed into the equation. **** **** ****The only way to really quantify the effect of such devices is to covertly measure stuttering frequency (many times, over time) out in the wild. But this too, is invalid--as it doesn't control for covert stuttering behaviors and avoidances. *** *** ***In the end, it seems that the only thing we've got are self-reports. (And these too have their validity problems.) *** *** ***I guess my point is to say if one says that there's evidence that DAF/FAF works in the wild, it may be a disingenuous statement. Similarly, if one says that there's no evidence that DAF/FAF works in the wild, that might be just as disingenuous--as there's really no fair way of measuring true efficacy. In time--reality will reveal itself... (I am awaiting the day that ISAD will accept carriage returns!)
