Hi Marissa, I'm back! ;-) My home pc is still out-of-order, so I'm having to resort to visiting the local library in order to participate in this online discussion. Incidentally, having re-read my earlier response, I note that it contains several typing errors. When the library network warned me that I had only 30 seconds remaining, I hastily pressed the 'submit' key, without having time to check my comments for grammar/spelling. ;-) The turning point for me occurred back in 2000 when I commenced an entirely different approach. You may wish to read my earlier reply to Jackie Schueller (above) in order to gain an insight into why I made the decision to change the direction of my life. (It's a little too lengthy to repeat here) ;-) The programme that I joined provided me with a technique (and tools) to deal with speech blocks and 'difficult' words. It also encouraged (inter alia) an holistic approach that involved self-acceptance; non-avoidance; expanding comfort zones; greater assertiveness...and so many other things. It also provided me with opportunities to access an international support network 24/7. In addition, I read a great deal about psychology and set about challenging my self-limiting beliefs, and widening my self-image to accommodate new roles. They unconsciously influence our thoughts and behaviours. You may wish to learn more about my personal experiences by reading some of the articles that I have written: (1) STUTTERING IS NOT JUST A SPEECH PROBLEM http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/Infostuttering/badmington.pdf (Adobe Reader required), or http://www.stammer.demon.co.uk/conf2001_alanbadmington/ (2) STEP OUTSIDE: Why expanding comfort zones can improve our stuttering and lead to more fulfilling lives http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad6/papers/badmington6.html (3) HOW I CHANGED MY STUTTERING MINDSET http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad8/papers/badmington8.html (4) TECHNOLOGY : A friend or foe of someone who stutters http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad9/papers/badmington9.html This should provide you with a little bedtime reading material. ;-) Marissa, I wish you every success with your studies at St Rose. Kindest regards Alan
