Thank you Song for your comments/questions. I will attempt your questions. Quietness and shyness increase the fear of stuttering. A child must be encouraged to talk. A child that i discovered to be quiet and shy, I teach him something to say that can help defuse the situation. I make sure that what ever responses i teach should be shourt and concise because the child who stutters is a a verbal disadvantage. Longer responses are likely to elicit more stuttering and physical tension, and this would reduce the effectiveness of the verbal comeback. Once I teach them what they need to respond to teasing in an appropriately assertive fashion, They will need to practice doing so reapeatedly so they will be able to actually use their planned responses in difficult situations. This makes the child exceptionally bold. The child too has to be encouraged to be creative. Inorder to help a child deal with her feared situations is to start from the inside. Quiteness and shyness, self-hate, shame are avoidance mechanisms. Here are some of my strategies. My strategies are aimed at making a child accept himself as a stuttering who needs a change or learning a new way of stuttering. The must important thing is to respond to a bully in a way that deflects aggression without causing harm or aggravating the situation. This is a real critical part of bullying and teasing management. I teach children teased to use "I" words in a clear confident manner e.g. " I want you to stop doing that" or " I feel bad when you say that") There is another technique that i teach in which children respond with the same phrase over and over e.g. " I can't hear you". " you may be right". Children can show the bully that they are not affected by teasing and bullying by simply looking away and acting bored. Song, I hope this helps a little.
