Hi Brittney. Thanks for your nice comment. I hope you guys get a taste for this weird thing called stuttering and want to major in stuttering, as we need you! (And you know that you can also read previous conference, don't you?) And as you're not my SLP and I'm not your client, we can talk about and ask each other just about anything. THAT's the power of this conference! I can only tell you what I would have wanted my parents to do and not to do. But all parents are different, so please don't use this to all parents: My Do's for MY parents top 3 would have been: 1. Listen to your child. Don't go by the ancient rules to wait and see. If your child starts to limb, you check it out, right? Well, don't let stuttering be any different. 2. Listen to yourself. If you're worried as a parent, that too is a sign to get help or at least to find more information. 3. OK. So your child has a stutter. But your child has so much more. Great skills, great qualities. Focus on the child's greatness and stimulate it's skills and qualities and let it accept that we all have our stronger and less stronger sides and that's ok. My Don't top 3 would be: 1. Don't feel guilty. It's not your fault your child is stuttering. But.. you can make it's life easier by learning what you can do to help. 2. Don't give up. If your child doesn't get the help it needs, fight for your rights. 3. Now that your child is stuttering, don't hide your child for the rest of the world. Your child having a linb will cause questions and you will probably talk to your child and others about it. Don't treat a stuttering child any different. Explain to people what it is and get the "being weird" out of our vocabulary. Something that's not your fault is nothing to be ashamed off. And one for the road: love your child (and each other), unconditionally. Keep talking! Anita
