Denise, I use written questionnaires as pre/post analysis. Conversation is my way of keeping therapy dynamic, fresh, and the clients' responsibility. Conversation is my reality check that what is going on in therapy is what the client wants to do. I learned this painful, yet life-changing lesson several years ago. As the SLP, I cannot presume to know what is best for a client. The client must communicate his needs and I must find ways to invite him into this dialogue. The SLP is set up from the start to be the person with the answers. This is a trap the SLP cannot not fall into. The SLP has to be proactive about inviting, rewarding and then demanding the client assume responsibility for the direction of therapy. Remember, the ultimate goal of theapy is to teach the person who stutters to become his/her own therapist. The SLP gradually becomes the student, learning about how the client - now the teacher - is discovering change. Thank you for your question. :)
