Dear Bridget and Elizabeth – Many thanks for your post and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. As a person who stutters, I can confirm that not being able to voice out our feelings in situations where we would like to is indeed an additional emotional and psychic stress with which we have to count. In our self-help group we do not deal specifically with the emotional aspects of stuttering – even though this is taken on board in our general philosophy and approach – namely having self-confidence, accepting ourselves as persons who stutters, announcing our stuttering in places where we feel we need and can do it, re-acquiring control on our life and re-conquering our place in society, and above all being committed to make a positive change in our life. A suggestion to someone wanting to start their own support group – is to be clear in his/her head about what he/she wants. Indeed, this is not an easy enterprise and things do not always work like we have wished. However, when we’re sure about what we are about, and our objective is clear, we’re armed to face any situations and use difficult situations as opportunities to go further. I hope this helps and if you would like to discuss further, please contact us on parole.espoir@yahoo.com. Jim.
