Dear Kate – Many thanks for your post. To me, the most difficult aspect in creating the self-help group was to make the first step. The first difficult thing was to take a decision to go forward with the project. Mark Irwin had put all the facts in front of me – what I would gain in launching the group – and what if I did not. The final decision however was left to me! Surprisingly – once I had taken a decision, things became clearer in my head – and I immediately felt more confident in myself. I soon found myself in front of a group introducing myself and stating that I am a person who stutters! I was very lucky that Mark was by my side on this day! The most important aspect of the group is friendship – and the commitment to make a positive change in my speech. Indeed, it is not always easy to be regular at meetings – and to put into practice the techniques we learn. But friendship and commitment help us to keep faith and continue our journey together. Please do not hesitate to contact us on parole.espoir@yahoo.com if you want to discuss further, and all the best to your own group. Jim.
