I was taught that stuttering was caused by multuple co-existing factors. That really doesn't help us much, except to say many different or related thaings may cause or contribute to stuttering. For some clients the etiology may be biochemical, for others neurological, etc. Still others may suffer from a weak or vulnerable motor system?? Rarely, the cause may be psychological---but fortunately not to the extent that was believed in years past. I stuttered pretty good for almost 30 years and have been pretty fluency for 30 more. I have devoted more than 40 years of my professional career studying this disorder. Like almost everyone else I have my favorite theory, but in all honesty I don't know what causes stuttering. I am even more confused about the cause(s) of cluttering. This disorder is certainly more language oriented and many people believe "more organic." I don't know. Good question. David Daly
