Thank you for your nice comments and your interest in this topic. I found, indeed, that generalization is one of the most difficult aspects of treatment for neurogenic stuttering. I think that the presence of brain damage and its more permanent consequences probably is a major factor here. Often these people have not only stuttering but also other language, cognitive, physical and other medical problems which makes treatment all the more complex. However, it may be that generalization is difficult for many patients because we really have no way of knowing as of yet what treatment works best for which patients and what predictor variables for treatment outcome are. Maybe if we have more and better tools to individualize our treatment approaches, we will be better able to work towards generalization with our clients.
