JMA - very interesting thoughts and question! I don't think we know the answer yet. There are a number of issues in your question. First of all it is not clear whether developmental stuttering and neurogenic stuttering represent the same 'stuttering' disorder - although there are definitely some overlaps, there are also some differences in manifestation, at least in some patients, which raise questions. Furthermore, different lesions may result in different behavioural manifestations, raising the issues of potential subgroups. I think your question goes to the heart of the matter and makes a wonderful case for further research in this area
