I am an SLP trying to encourage a teenage student to raise his hand in class. He looks terrified at this suggestion. If he raises his hand in class more often, will his fluency increase? Or, should he raise his hand in class purely to work on avoidance and not expect any fluency benefits? For a teen who is working toward fluency, why should he stop avoiding and end up stuttering? Thank you. (p.s. I want him to become more comfortable with stuttering, but, who am I to say what it would be like to stutter in a high school classroom?!)
