I'm a graduate student at West Virginia University in speech pathology, and I stutter myself. People always ask me what the hardest aspect of my stuttering is, and I always tell them it's trying to undo all of my avoidance/secondary behaviors. The more you hide from something, the worst it's going to get. It's a snowball affect. The more you hide, the more fearful you come, which in turn makes you want to hide even more. The only way to stop this, is to face your fears head on. Ironically, the situations you avoided the most aren't nearly as bad as you originally thought. It isn't so much the degree or severity of your stutter, it's the fear you feel when you do stutter or when you are in those difficult situations. You eliminate the fear, you eliminate any limitations you have, whether you still stutter or not. I enjoyed your article, and everyone who stutters can take a lot from it. -Tim
