Dear Andy, I am currently an SLP grad student at NYU and after reading about your experience with stuttering in your teenage years, I feel that today’s teens will find it relatable to their lives. I admire your openness about the ways you avoided stuttering and facing the struggle of wanting to be able to do/say things just like your peers, to just be able to express your personality. You mentioned how speech therapy helped but it seems like you also developed a positive outlook towards your stuttering. Based on your experience, would you say that being positive and not having the “fear of how” you’re going to say something helped you have more success and confidence in your speech, allowing you to have control over your stuttering instead of the other way around? And for future reference, as an SLP what approach(es) have you used and think is best in helping teens who stutter and are emotionally affected by it? Thank you for sharing your story!
