I first time I remember ever feeling that someone else understood what I was going through was early in my sophomore year in college at the University of Colorado. I met Brett - the first person I had ever met who stuttered. We shared stories about the things we would do to avoid stuttering and I came to realize that all the crazy things I was doing were normal reactions to try and not stutter in front of people. Brett also made me realize that there are some SLPs out there who can really help and teach you some tools so you don't have to hide all the time. She went on to become an SLP just like I did :) Thanks Brett!!
