Yes I sometimes help kids pick goals - sometimes the kids have no idea what to say or they also have expressive language goals and they find expressing something like that difficult. I can't remember the last time I said no to a school related goal. I try to guide the goals to something I can measure at school, but if I think the family will follow through on it, then home goals are also included. However, if the child said something like giving a presentation in front of the whole school (which probably wouldn't ever happen), then I would just be blunt and say that I really can't see that happening since kids rarely get to do that. Can you give me an example of one you're thinking of? Like in my response to Judy, if the goal is doable in the school setting, but will be very difficult for this child, then I usually put it as a #11 (a super bonus one) - just in case we get that far. I am wondering: do you ever help children to find goals to set? Also, what kind of language do you use if you are not sure the child is naming a realistic short-term goal?
