Hi, I have a question that you may be able to offer some advice on. I have a sister who is pursuing her bachelor's degree in the health care field, and has stuttered since she was a young child. Lately, she has experienced an increase in the number and severity of her stutters, and has also talked about how she worries that her professors and classmates perceive her as less competent. She also talks of her desire to be more self-confident. Do you have any advice to me, as a caring family member on how to help her develop more confidence in her speaking? What did you appreciate from your friends and family? As a graduate student in speech language pathology, I know it is not helpful for me to dwell on her fluency and tell her things like , "Just spit it out". But what specifically might support her?
