Hi Tiffany, Thank you for your comments. The issue of contradiction and grey areas......is central to this whole debate. Unfortunately it is not one or the other......the postive and negatives can often merge.We live in a society where style is often preferred to substance...look at many politicians out there! "Fluency can equate with knowledge, expertise,"...is not a good state of affairs.....some of the best communicators are not fluent. Feeling "less threatened, less of an authoritarian figure", is a positive expereince for the student in their learning and having a lecturer/teacher as an authority figure without the substance, compassion, etc ...is negative! Hope this helps? Rob Comments This was a very interesting topic. I have learned that understanding the emotions and feelings of one who stutters is very important. I also feel that the problems/challenges and postive outcomes that were listed were very helpful but in a way contradicting to me. If you feel that one of the problems for you, as being an academic with a mild stutter, is that fluency can equate with knowledge, expertise, and superior communication, then how would also stating that students feel less threatened, less of an authoritarian figure be a positive outcome?
