I appreciate the perspective you present in your article for two main reasons. First, you focus on the fact that communication is primarily about content or substance and not so much about style and presentation. This reminds me of a book in which I read that true communication is not about speaking perfectly but about being understood fully. I believe that what I take away from this, as I look forward to a career as an SLP, is the value of maintaining a wholistic view of my clients without getting obsessive over whether or not they speak perfectly. Hopefully we will remember to stress this enough in schools where grammar and style are often viewed as more important than the content of what students are saying. Otherwise we may hamper creative thinking and meaningful expression. The second refreshing aspect of your article is the fact that you consider the positive outcome your stuttering has for your students. I'm glad you could see your situation from a seemingly other-centered perspective that helps them relate to you comfortably. Thank you for sharing your personal experience and, in doing so, inspiring others who could be in similar situations!
