Many people who are intubated sustain damage to their vocal folds. It is better than dying. I have the same perspective on stuttering that I had before. I learned quite a bit more about voice disorders than I had known before, and I knew quite a bit before: For a few years before my hospitalization, I assisted Dr. Fisher, NSU's voice specialist, and Dr. Contrucci, the E.N.T who works with her, in NSU's weekly voice diagnostcs clinic. I had a number of positive experiences. I had an attitude of acceptance and I enjoyed opportunities to help others, even though I needed a lot of help myself. It was a matter of not worrying about where I came from or how I got there, but instead being fully"present where you are" and being as useful as possible, even if that meant just listening carefuly to someone else. Actually, listening carefully snd deply to another is one of the most important things we can do. BH
