Hi Deann. Thanks for your comments and questions. Comments about my disclosure have always been positive. I don't believe that I have ever had a negative reaction when I have talked about my stuttering. And, yes, I don't know that I have ever NOT felt better and more comfortable speaking after talking about my stuttering. It's amazing the calmness of both the speaker and listener when stuttering is brought out in the open. For adults who stutter, disclosure is very powerful. And I certanly have suggested that clients use self-disclosure about their stuttering. I can't think of a client that I would not at least suggest this to. When you use self-disclosure, you let your listener know that, 1: I know I stutter, 2: I am just stuttering (not having a heart attack), 3: I am okay with my stuttering (even if part of me might not be), 4: stuttering is okay (even if only part of me truly believes that)... the great thing is, is that not only am I letting my listener know that I stutter and am okay with it, but I am letting MYSELF know that, too. Everytime I do that (now included), I accept myself and my stuttering a little bit more than I did before... Thanks, Deann. Joe
