Hi Kim. Thanks. Wow, a very important topic -- what exactly is it about a therapist that creates change... to me, that's THE question in stuttering therapy right now. Knowledge about stuttering is very important, obviously. The therapist that I had was knowledgeable, immensely caring -- his body language and tone of voice let you know that you were important, he was truly interested in me and my stuttering, and let me know in no uncertain terms that it was me, and not him, who held the key to my success... He was also able to be caring and tough at the same time, which I think can be difficult for young clinicians. He was also very good at letting what was important RIGHT NOW be what happened in the therapy room. There were no lesson plans and I'm sure when the session was over lots of the best ones did not go the way he had imagined they would when he began. He created an environment where I could fully explore my stuttering and the accompanying behaviors and feelings.... is that a good start??? Take care, Joe.
