Hi Christina. Motivation is very important. John Tetnowski and his students at Louisianna-Lafayette are doing some great work understanding the motivation, problem solving, and clinical alliance that goes on to make a true difference in the lives of people who stutter. Stuttering is very frustrating and very difficult for lots of people. Therapy is always two steps forward and two steps back, and sometimes it is difficult to realize that steps forward ever happened until years later. All that one can do is to be her or himself, and to be "okay" with that, for lack of a better word. It's really about living with integrity, after all. The stuttering itself is just how someone speaks. So, I think that remembering the "big" goal of being a good commmunicator, and understanding that setbacks are to be expected, is very important to keep clients and clinicians motivated. I hope that begins to answer your question. Take care. Joe
