Every situation has a silver lining if you bother to look for it. My avoidance-driven word substitution in high school gave me a tremendous vocabulary, and the writing skill I developed to compensate for my stuttering led to a satisfying and rewarding career. I landed my first newspaper job at 19 and have been writing professionally every since.
