I do not recall any advice to not care about what others said. My parents never cut me any slack, however, and expected me to win a scholarship and go to college whether I stuttered or not. Even without the increased availability of support resources since my teen years, it really does get easier as you get older -- simply because you are more mature and self-confident. It's easier when you are out of your teens, and easier yet when you reach middle age.
