My stuttering was not that severe when I was a child, so I coped by hiding my stuttering: avoiding words and situations. (When a school speech therapist says she has no kids who stutter in her caseload, that usually means the kids in that school are good at hiding.) These days, kids are encouraged to be open about their stuttering: a much healthier course of action. The NSA web site, in fact, has a downloadable presentation on stuttering for kids to present to their classmates.
