Chanel, you have an excellent grasp of the problem. Of course, my pursuit of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)/ Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) helped me. In order to solve the practical problem of stuttering first we must solve the emotional problems that we have created around stuttering. I believe that one of to courses in REBT would help an SLP to do the counseling herself, without calling on a psychologist. If you send me your e-mail address to neidersg@comcast.net I will forward you my dissertation which would outline all the counseling techniques you would need to know. As Dr. Walt Manning, who wrote Clinical Decision Making in Fluency Disorders, says doing stuttering therapy you can’t escape counseling the client. So you might as well become acquainted with the techniques.
