Karen, From the getgo act as if your client knows things about himself or herself better than you do and you know more about what has helped certain other people to become practically fluent. Then be very open and collaborate with your client in talking about what is to be expected in the therapy process; especially about tasks to be done in between the therapy sessions. If a client has a difficulty doing something that he or she is afraid of trying to even attempt, the most important example might be voluntary pseudo-stuttering, demonstrate it to him or her right away how it is done. Don't just talk about it; do it. And do it right away......no procrastination. Then without missing a beat set up a situation where he or she can try what you have just demonstrated. The attempt at doing something is 90% + as valuable as doing it "right". In most of the take home assignments, good-enough is good-enough. After a homework assignment have the client dispassionatly grade himself or herself. And always remember the trend, just like in stock market is more important than the day to day variations. As a rule try to ask,"Are you on-the-average getting better at voluntary pseudo-stuttering. This way the client will start to look at trends instead at specific ups and downs and have an easier time not to turn a lapse into a relapse.
